Research Centers OM and ORSTAT
Louvain, Belgium

The Research Centers OM and ORSTAT at the Faculty of Economics and Business of KU Leuven (Belgium) are offering a position for a full-time PhD student.

The position is associated with the research project "Designing resilient and recoverable infrastructures via multi-level and multi-stage optimization". The goal of the project is to develop algorithms for planning and optimizing resilient network infrastructures (for energy, transportation, communication), considering both the design of the network as well as recovery operations after a potential large-scale disruption. We are interested both in the theoretical analysis of such algorithms, yielding proven worst-case guarantees, as well as thorough evaluation in computational experiments.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a strong background in mathematics, theoretical computer science, operations research, or a closely related field, who recently completed their master's degree or is about to complete it in 2022. Good knowledge of combinatorial optimization (algorithms, network and scheduling problems, mathematical programming etc.) and/or strong programming skills are an asset.

KU Leuven is the largest university of Belgium and ranked among the top 50 universities in the world. Leuven is a beautiful and liveable city with a large and international student population in the heart of Europe, only a 20min train-ride from Brussels and well-connected to many other European metropoles. Our faculty is located in the historic city center, just a 5min walk from the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Groot Begijnhof".

We offer employment as a full-time doctoral scholar for initially one year, renewable for up to four years after positive evaluation. Salary is competitive and funds for conference travels, participation in summer schools, and other activities are available. The tentative starting date is October 2022, but later dates are possible, depending on the availability of the candidate.

KU Leuven seeks to foster an environment where all talents can flourish, regardless of gender, age, cultural background, nationality, or impairments.
