Our offer
The successful candidates will be employed at the Faculty of Technical Sciences, Departments for Mathematics and Statistics. The 9 positions funded by the FWF are 75% (30 hours/week) part-time positions, limited to 3 years (Uni-KV: B1, www.jobs.aau.at/en/faq/), with the possibility of an extension by at most 1 year. The 3 positions funded by the University of Klagenfurt are 75% (30 hours/week) part-time positions, limited to 4 years (Uni-KV: B1, www.jobs.aau.at/en/faq/). Filling the positions funded by the FWF will be prioritized. The monthly gross salary is € 2,196.80, paid 14 times per year, and can be increased to a maximum of € 2,604.30 by taking previous experience into account. Tasks and responsibilities
• Autonomous scientific work including the publication of research articles in one or more of the following fields: discrete optimization, combinatorics, regularization methods, parameter identification, computational stochastics and stochastic control, dynamical systems, Bayesian statistics

Required qualification
• Master’s degree at a national or international university in mathematics, statistics, or a related field. This requirement must be fulfilled two weeks before the starting date at the latest; the last possible deadline for meeting this requirement is hence August 14, 2021.
• Profound knowledge in one or more of the following fields: discrete optimization, combinatorics, regularization methods, parameter identification, computational stochastics and stochastic control, dynamical systems, Bayesian statistics

Project: Finding the ‘new normal’: the power of distinct contacts
The current COVID-19 lockdown measures aimed at limiting total contacts have tremendously high costs for the economy and the population’s mental health. How to live with the virus without a vaccine remains an urgent open question. The objective of this project is to provide novel decision support tools to enable policymakers to evaluate, compare, and suggest new contact limitation measures with the objective of maximizing the number of contacts allowed to stay within a target allowable disease spread. Specifically, this project investigates the hypothesis that the same basic reproduction number R0 is obtainable with more contact moments when one limits the number of different contacts. To this end, the project combines operations research tools with novel epidemiology models that model distinct contacts resulting from interactions in a social network and daily activity patterns. Of particular interest to this project are complex-network approaches that assume people connect through a network, rather than meet randomly.

You will play a crucial role in (1) development and implementation of new fast epidemiology models that are able to evaluate desease spread under different lockdown measures with a focus on the impact of the number of distinct contacts per person and (2) development, implementation and evaluation of optimization techniques for identifying promissing lockdown measures that maximize valuable contact moments while keeping the reproduction number R0 on or below a target level.

Responsibilities and tasks
You will work closely together with associate professor E. van der Hurk and professor D. Pisinger to develop mathematical models that recommend alternative strategies for lockdowns – particularly, ones that aim to preserve as many valuable contact moments between people as possible while keeping the spread of the virus low.

Specifically, you will be responsible for
The design and implementation of mathematical epidemiology models that should be computationally fast (Your role: co-responsible).
Design optimization techniques to explore a wide set of contact limitation policies, fast, and indicate those that maximize valuable connections while keeping the spread of the virus at or below a predefined limit. Both heuristic and exact approaches with a focus on Operations Research and/or Graph Structures could be considered. (Your role: leading).
You will need the ability to work in a small team and work on collaborative coding efforts, while also being able to independently design, implement and investigate new concepts related to the project.

Qualifications
You should have a PhD-degree in applied mathematics, operations research, computer science, mathematical epidemiology modelling, physics, complex networks, or a similar degree with an equivalent academic level.

It is a requirement to be able to demonstrate experience in at least two of the following:
complex networks,
graph theory,
exact methods for optimization,
heuristic methods for optimization
Experience with mathematical epidemiology models is an advantage.

When you have the desire to research theoretical interesting questions that have immediate practical value for dealing with the current COVID-19 crises, you may be just the person we are looking for.

It is essential to have a good command of a programming language (preferable java/C/C++ or similar; or otherwise Python/Julia and similar). Ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment is an advantage. Good command of the English language is essential.

The group OASYS (“Optimization and Analytics for Sustainable EnergY Systems”) is looking for a
highly-talented applicant for a post-doctoral position with a focus on Advanced analytics and
its applications to sustainable energy systems. Among other things, the postdoctoral fellow is
expected to contribute to the development and implementation of a system that, by the use of
large amounts and a wide variety of data, enables small prosumers of electricity to compete on
wholesale energy markets on equal footing with big producers, retailers and consumers.
The initial term of the position is for 1 year, with the possibility of extension, based on mutual
interest and convenience. The postdoctoral fellow will become a key member of OASYS
(https://sites.google.com/view/groupoasys/home), by developing excellent research,
supervising PhD. and MSc. students, and helping attract new talents and funds. OASYS is located

The candidate is expected to have:

2. The qualifications, skills and expertise of an operations researcher, that is, with a strong
background in mathematical programming and optimization theory; methods for
decision-making under uncertainty, in particular, stochastic programming, robust

level programming); decomposition techniques; parallel and distributed computing, etc.

We look for candidates with competences in several of these fields. Knowledge of

languages like Python and optimization solvers like Cplex on High-Performance
Computing Facilities.
4. An excellent command of the English language, both orally and in writing.

The goal of the project is to apply and develop methods from data science (including machine learning methods) to quantify the benefits of transplantations depending on donor and recipient characteristics. In addition, the goal is to design and evaluate allocation mechanisms. The project is a cooperation between Eindhoven University of Technology and Eurotransplant. The project has a large applied component; it is expected that results of this project will impact Eurotransplant’s policies. The position is for a period of 4 years at the Eindhoven University of Technology, Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. The PhD-student’s working locations will be both at Eurotransplant headquarters in Leiden, as well as at TU/e. We are looking for a student with a strong background in at least one of the following subjects: statistics, machine learning, discrete optimization, operations research. A strong interest in the medical and health policy aspects of the project are a plus.

Job requirements

Being a PhD student in the Netherlands

In the Netherlands, every PhD student gets paid a salary; no additional grants are needed. Moreover, although PhD students sometimes take courses, there is no minimum requirement. Hence, PhD students are more like employees than like students. Indeed, the Dutch word for PhD student translates to "research trainee". The work of a PhD student may include assisting in courses of BSc or MSc programs of the department. This amounts to around 10% of the time; the remaining time is spent on research and research-related activities. Foreign PhD students don't need to speak Dutch: it is easy to get by with English, not only at the university but also in everyday life.

Professor in the area of Applied Continuous or Discrete Optimisation

The successful applicant will perform innovative research in the area of mathematical optimisation and its applications. The work ranges from the mathematical analysis of algorithms for optimisation problems to their concrete application in science, industry and society. The position is open for all areas of specialisation within optimisation ranging from combinatorial optimisation, discrete optimisation to continuous optimisation.

The Department of Mathematics has research groups in Applied Mathematics and Fundamental Mathematics. You will join the research group Applied Mathematics that develops, analyses and teaches mathematical methods for large-scale complex systems that describe contemporary scientific, industrial and financial applications. It delivers complete mathematical solutions. It designs the mathematical models in collaboration with domain experts, constructs and analyses the numerical and statistical solvers for the equations and studies their efficient implementation on high-performance and parallel computers.

The group has close collaborations with domain experts from the natural sciences such as biology, chemistry and physics as well as applied sciences such as financial and actuarial mathematics and engineering science. There are also collaborations with a variety of industrial partners.

The research group Applied Mathematics aims to strengthen the collaboration with other research groups, departments and faculties within the University of Antwerp where mathematics is applied.

Job description

You will teach courses in mathematical optimisation, its numerical implementation and relevant numerical linear algebra in the bachelor Mathematics and the master program Financial and Applied Mathematics. There is also limited service teaching in the Faculty of Science.
You will expand the research in solution techniques for large-scale continuous, discrete or combinatorial optimisation. You develop and analyse the methods and apply them to current scientific, industrial, financial and actuarial applications.
You acquire and manage national and international research funding. As member of the research group Applied Mathematics you will expand your own research topics, while participating also in joint projects of the group.
You supervise bachelor, master and PhD students.
You strengthen the links between the Department of Mathematics and other research groups, departments and faculties within the University of Antwerp as well with companies.
You will offer service to the Department of Mathematics and the Faculty of Science by participating in, amongst others, the educational board of Mathematics, the departmental council Mathematics, and similar.
Profile and requirements

You hold a doctorate degree (PhD) in Mathematics, Mathematical Engineering, Operational Research, or equivalent.
You have several years of postdoctoral experience or equivalent.
Your research excellence in optimisation is illustrated through scientific publications in applied mathematical journals with high impact, international collaborations and participation and organisation of conferences or workshops.
A track record of valorisation of research results through industrial research projects, spin-off companies or patents is an advantage.
You have a proven track record in obtaining research funding both for theoretical and applied research.
You have a wide experience in academic teaching at the bachelor and master level of Mathematics.
The focus in your teaching corresponds to the educational vision of the university.
Your academic qualities comply with the requirements stipulated in the university’s policy.
You have leadership skills (or the potential to develop them).
You are quality-oriented, conscientious, creative and cooperative.
As a course unit coordinator/lecturer, you can demonstrate that you master the language of instruction at the CEFR level C1 before the start of the course. We offer

General information
A PhD scholarship runs for a period of 3 years and includes teaching obligations equivalent of ½ year’s work (840 work hours). The scholarships are fully salaried positions, according to the national Danish collective agreement. The scholarship includes the tuition fees, office space, travel grants plus a salary, currently starting with per month app. DKK 27,363 up to DKK 33,045 depending on seniority, plus a pension contribution totaling 17.1% of 85 per cent of the base salary. The salary level and appointment are determined by the Ministry of Finance’s collective agreement with the Central Academic Organisation.
The PhD student will be enrolled at the CBS PhD School. To be considered, the candidate should have a basic training at the master’s level (similar to the 3 + 2 Bologna process). An educational background in economics or related fields is necessary. Normally, the applicant must have successfully completed a master’s degree before commencing PhD at CBS. However, we will also consider current master students for enrolment in the 4+4 scheme. The applicants must be fluent in English. The Department will give priority to applicants with high grades from their universities.

JOB DESCRIPTION
This postdoc position is part of the CUSTOMIZE project (Customer-driven prescriptive analytics for logistics planning) funded by the Netherlands Oraganisation for Scientific Research (NWO). The project is aimed at the estimation of customer demand and optimization of logistics services.

The project is divided in two parts. The first part aims to develop a model to forecast logistics demand at micro-level. The forecasting model looks to infer the behavior of the customers by using transaction data. In the second part, we integrate the forecasting model into an optimization framework. The optimization model determines the expected number of vehicles and their locations to perform their services. Finally, all the developed elements will be integrated into a simulation model for real-time optimization of the on-demand system. The developed models will be tested and validated on real-life cases. The necessary data will be provided by our industrial partners Takeaway.com and PostNL.

The selected researcher will have a close collaboration with the industrial partners and the department of Econometrics of the Erasmus University Rotterdam. The duration of the appoitnment is 19 months, starting as early as possible but ultimately by 06/2020.

REQUIREMENTS
The successful candidate should have a strong background in operations research. Basic knowledge of data analytics and discrete choice modelling are desirable, but not a strict requirement.

Project Description
The main objective of this PhD project is to develop new mathematical models and combinatorial optimisation techniques for smart and efficient development of road network infrastructure for navigation of vehicles using new types of energies, e.g. electric, biofuel, hydrogen, and to advise on efficient routing with respect to the existing infrastructure. This will be based on development of more subtle mathematical models using graphs and digraphs and done by algorithmically solving the corresponding combinatorial optimisation problems, obtaining related analytical and structural results. We will examine new models on weighted graphs and digraphs using different types of dominating set concepts, subsequently developing new methodologies to provide efficient and effective algorithmic solution techniques. Special attention will be paid to scaling of the models to large-size road networks.

The PhD student should have a solid background in Graph Theory and algorithms related to optimisation in graphs and digraphs, including algorithm engineering. Experience of implementing algorithms using low-level programming languages like C/C++ would be an asset. The PhD student will work across the disciplinary boundaries of graph theory, combinatorics, algorithms design, and optimisation in the context of geographic information systems and transport networks analysis. In doing so, they will develop advanced skills in mathematics and related areas of computer science. They will be an active member of the Operational Research group and Discrete Mathematics and Data Science interdisciplinary research team in the School of Mathematics. This will provide them with an opportunity to form collaborations, to draw from the expertise of both groups, and to participate in corresponding research seminar series and events.

The 4 year studentship includes UK/EU fees, stipend (amount for 2020/21 is £15285) and a research training grant to cover costs such as research consumables, training, conferences and travel.

Salary

The role is grade UE07 and attracts an annual salary of £33,797 to £40,322 for full time hours each week. Salary is paid monthly by direct transfer to your Bank or Building Society account, normally on the 28th of the month. We seek a qualified candidate to work on a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) between University of Kent and Eurostar Limited involving the development and application of optimisation techniques to tackle operational challenges and support Eurostar's long-term strategic aims. Eurostar is the only high-speed train operator directly linking the UK to mainland Europe via the Channel Tunnel. The successful applicant will be based at Eurostar headquarters in London and will work closely with Eurostar managers based in Lille and a team of academics in the Management Science Group at Kent Business School. This is an exciting opportunity to work at a high-level position on putting cutting-edge analytics techniques into practice at a dynamic, publically visible, and economically important UK company.

The KTP Associate will be tasked with optimising train timetables, the assignment of trains to services, maintenance scheduling and other operational planning problems. Successful delivery of the project will help to devise more robust train timetables/service assignment and drive future revenue growth.

Applicants should ideally hold a PhD in operational research, management science, business analytics, or a closely allied discipline. Strong applicants with an MSc (with Distinction) will also be considered. The Associate must have an in-depth knowledge of optimisation and heuristic modelling techniques, as well as a good understanding of data analysis and statistics. Good English communication skills, both oral and written, are essential. Computer programming skills (in C/C++, Java, or similar), familiarity with optimisation modelling software (e.g. CPLEX), previous consultancy experience, a track record of publishing in academic journals, and proficiency in French are all highly desirable. Please note that regular travel to the Control Room Eurostar, based in Lille, France, will be required.

The KTP Associate will be employed on a 12-month fixed term contract. However, there is the potential, depending on progress and internal company approval, to extend the project beyond the 12-month timeframe through full-time employment at Eurostar.

This position is part of the ELSAT 2020 project: “Ecomobility, Logistics, Security and Adaptability in Transport.” It is funded by the French government, the French “Hauts de France” Region and the European Regional Development Fund. In particular, the post-doc will be involved in the project COMPRAIL “Techniques and tools for rail competitiveness” of the fourth Strategic Objective “Design and performances of vehicle functions”.
The post-doc will focus on the design and development of optimization modules for rail traffic management. These modules will be integrated in a closed-loop simulation environment for testing and assessing the rail system. The research will focus on both theoretical and methodological aspects, to allow the emergence of new solution approaches. These approaches will have to be effective for the solution of difficult and (very) large instances of hard combinatorial problems.
Applicants must have a PhD in operations research, computer science, software engineering, applied mathematics or equivalent. They must be willing to integrate to the research activities of the team of the COSYS-ESTAS laboratory by providing original ideas, participating to international conferences and producing high quality scientific papers. Good knowledge of C++ and fluency in spoken and written English are essential requirements.

Context
The research is part of the SNCF work towards the development of new mobility services complementary to conventional rail transport. It takes as a starting point the Autonomous Shuttle project between Nantes and Carquefou (France). It also addresses certain aspects of more generic configurations.
Goal
Design and testing of an optimization algorithm for the real-time planning of a dedicated on-demand passenger transport service.
Problem definition
The problem is to plan the shuttle service operating on a dedicated line for passenger transport.
In rush hour, the shuttle service is planned in a periodic manner. This rush hour service defines the sizing of the fleet.
In off-peak hours, the service is on demand: the user connects to the system (through terminals or a smartphone application, for example) and requests a service specifying: the departure and arrival stops, the desired departure time and the number of passengers. This request can be made in real time or in advance. Based on a request to be satisfied, a forecast of available requests, the validated service plan and the current position of the shuttles, the algorithm decides which shuttle satisfies the demand of each user and in which order. If suitable, the shuttles can be organized in convoys. The main constraints to be taken into account are: the maximum travel time; the maximum waiting time; the charge level of shuttle batteries (if electric); the location and recharge time of shuttles (if electric); the constraints of the shift of the drivers or operators (if non autonomous shuttles).
The infrastructure is dedicated and has a simple structure. Several turning points may be available, as well as several garage areas. In the case of electric shuttles, the location of the charging stations is given. Different criteria are critical for evaluating the system performance. In particular, the waiting time of the user, the travel time, and the shuttle utilization. The algorithm considers either one of these criteria or a weighed sum of two or three.
In addition to real-time service planning, the algorithm can be used offline to perform scenario analysis, for example to evaluate the performance of an autonomous shuttle system versus driver-operated shuttles.
