Description
General Description
The Department of Industrial Engineering at the University of Louisville is seeking a research scientist for research activities in the general area of additive manufacturing and data analytics. This is a 1-year appointment with extension for another year. This position will be under the immediate supervision of Dr. Li Yang, but will interact extensively with other faculty and staff in the Department of Industrial Engineering and the Additive Manufacturing Institute and Science and Technology (AMIST).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
This position is expected to collaborate with faculty in the Department of Industrial Engineering and more broadly with other members in AMIST. The Department was one of the first departments at University of Louisville that initiated additive manufacturing research. The AM faculty in the department are involved in the research and development of multiple areas in additive manufacturing including:
1. Integrated design for additive manufacturing
2. Novel structure concepts for additive manufacturing-enabled designs
3. Modeling-based quality characterization of additive manufacturing processes and structures
4. Supply chain and logistics in additive manufacturing
5. Data analytics in additive manufacturing for decision making and optimization
At AMIST, over 25 members including faculty, staff and research students are currently involved in various aspects of additive manufacturing research and development, including process science, new material concepts, structural designs, material characterization, applications in biomedical, energy and aerospace fields, workforce training, and logistics. Members of AMIST are affiliated with multiple departments within Speed School of Engineering as well as in Schools of Dentistry and Medicine.
For this position, some specific responsibilities include:
- Developing/writing research proposals for submission to federal and state agencies, with the opportunity to lead them (e.g., as principal investigator);
- Engaging in research initiative efforts for existing and new research projects, and leading and executing preliminary research projects in related areas;
- Mentoring graduate and undergraduate research students;
- Teaching (in regular/virtual classroom setup) courses related to additive manufacturing principles, process and
structure design considerations, data analytics, and qualification of additive manufacturing processes and materials.
This position is anticipated to exhibit independent research attitude as a senior personnel in the IE department’s AM research cluster.
Minimum Requirements
This position requires a PhD degree in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Computer Science, or a closely related field. Experiences with hands-on experimentation and theoretical modeling/analysis are both required due to the multi-disciplinary nature of this position.
Preferred Qualifications
The preferred candidates should demonstrate extensive research experience in the areas of additive manufacturing, data modeling and design theories, experiences in successful proposal writing and journal publication, and experiences in teaching. The interested applicants are strongly encouraged to communicate with the search committee chair, Dr. Li Yang (li.yang.1@louisville.edu) for additional discussions about the alignment of individual’s research interest and the focus of this position.
