PhD positions in combinatorial optimisation

The Algorithms and Complexity Group of IDSIA (www.idsia.ch), University of Lugano (Switzerland), opens two Ph.D. positions in the area of approximation algorithms with special focus on Lift and Project methods and Sum of Squares hierarchy for combinatorial optimization. The position is supported by the SNSF Grant "Lift and project methods for machine scheduling".
The position is for 3 years, with the possibility of an extension by 1 year (subject to approval by SNSF). The gross salary is roughly 50.000 CHF per year (low taxes).
Candidates should have an excellent academic degree in mathematics, theoretical computer science or a related area.
A solid background in Algorithms, Computational Complexity, Discrete Mathematics, Probability Theory, and/or Graph Theory is
helpful. Good communication skills and solid English writing skills are necessary. In addition, the successful candidate will be highly self-motivated, passionate about her/his work, and have good ability to work both independently as well as in a team.
Team members will have the opportunity to cooperate with the Algorithms and Complexity group at IDSIA, which currently consists of 8 researchers. IDSIA offers an international working environment.
Lugano is a tidy and lively town, with a wonderful view on Ceresio lake and mountains around. Ticino Canton offers many opportunities for hiking, biking, skiing, etc.

The successful candidate addresses innovative research in the fields of Management Science, Logistics, Operations Management

Project Description
The position is co-funded by “Regione Emilia Romagna” to LEAP (Laboratorio Energia Ambiente Piacenza, a laboratory participated by Politecnico di Milano and Università Cattolica) in the framework of the Research Project entitled “Efficity”. The project objective is to to develop methods and algorithms for the optimal scheduling, operation, control and design (investment planning) of smart energy networks with high share of renewable sources (solar, wind, etc).
The project involves both academic partners (Politecnico di Milano, Università di Bologna, Università di Parma) and industrial partners. The industrial partners include leading Italian utility companies for the management of energy networks (CPL Concordia, SIRAM, ANTAS), OPTIT (a spin-off company of University of Bologna in the field of optimization and IT solutions) and a number of construction companies involved in the network “Condomini Intelligenti”.
LEAP, with the supervision of professors of Politecnico di Milano, has to coordinate the activities of the project and to develop novel tools (methods, models and algorithms) for optimizing the scheduling and design (investment planning) of smart energy networks.
In today’s state of the art approaches for optimizing smart energy networks, the scheduling and design problems are tackled with Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) models and methods. Important aspects to be considered are the uncertainty associated to the forecasts of production from intermittent renewable sources (solar and wind energy) as well as the uncertainty in the forecast of heat and power demands (to be satisfied by the energy network. The main approaches to account for such uncertainty are robust optimization and stochastic programming.
The candidate will have to develop MILP models of the energy networks (LEAP researchers will provide the required knowledge on energy systems and energy networks), devise ad hoc solution/decomposition algorithms (the models and algorithms will be coded in AMPL, GAMS, Matlab or other programming language to be agreed with the supervisors), and apply the methods to case studies provided by the industrial partners.
Due to the relevance of the topics, some tasks may be performed in collaboration with international universities (e.g., ETH and EPFL) and the results of the project will be published in international journals and conference proceedings.
Expected starting date: End of February - Beginning of March with some flexibility.
Duration of the contract: 1 year, with possibility of one year extension
Required skills:
Applicants must have a relevant master degree (for example in Engineering, Mathematics, Information Technologies or Computer Science) and must have taken courses in Operations Research (Optimization).
Applicants must be familiar with Mixed Integer Programming theory and tools. In particular, applicants must have experience with mathematical modelling languages (e.g., AMPL or GAMS) as well as Matlab or other programming languages (e.g., Python, C++, etc).
Having a PhD in Operations Research or in a related field is appreciated but not required.

PhD Position in Optimisation of Renewable Energy

A PhD studentship in optimization is available at the Dept. of Management Science, University of Strathclyde Business School, Glasgow, UK, for the project topic entitled "Optimization of Offshore Renewable Energy Arrays for Minimal Life-Cycle Costs".
Funding is available to cover 3 years of tuition fees plus a tax free stipend (£14,653 for 2017-18, and projected to increase to £15,020 for 2018-19 and £15,395 for 2019-20). The studentship is open to candidates from any nationality (UK/EU/international), however, the fees will be covered at the UK/EU level.

ABOUT THE PROJECT
A fundamental difficulty in developing offshore renewable energy (ORE) sites is that the uncertain environmental conditions make accurately assessing the life-cycle costs of a site a challenging problem. In particular, logistical operations throughout the life of a site are subject to uncertain operating conditions, and it is therefore difficult to plan and schedule these operations, and to estimate the resulting durations and costs. Similarly, the generating potential throughout the operation of a given site is dependent on the realised weather as well as the availability of each asset, and uncertainties in each of these make it difficult to accurately predict the profits to be gained from energy production. Decisions on aspects such as the size, layout and composition of a site are therefore difficult to accurately quantify and compare.
This project will aim to develop optimisation models to identify the best strategy for designing an ORE site. A complimentary PhD project in the Dept. of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Marine Engineering at Strathclyde will take an alternative approach to the problem, and as both projects progress in parallel, mutual developments will feed into both projects. This will provide a cross-disciplinary approach to a challenging research problem with potential industry impact.
FUNDING AND ELIGIBILITY
Funding is available to cover 3 years of tuition fees at the UK/EU level, plus a tax free stipend of £14,653 for 2017-18, and projected to increase to £15,020 for 2018-19 and £15,395 for 2019-20. The student will be given opportunities to attend a conference and/or specialized training every year.
The PhD project requires a highly numerate graduate with interests in renewable energy. Candidates should have at least a strong Honours degree or equivalent (a strong 2:1 Honours degree, or a B.Sc. degree with 3.3 GPA in a 4.0 system), or preferably a Master’s degree in a quantitative discipline such as industrial engineering, operations research, mathematics or computer science (amongst others). Experience in programming and fundamental knowledge in optimization are not essential but highly desirable. Candidates who are not native English speakers will be required to provide evidence for their English skills (such as by IELTS or similar tests that are approved by UKVI, or a degree completed in an English speaking country).

The postdoc will work on a research project devoted to revenue management for attended home delivery service.
Attended home delivery is a last-mile delivery service, where the customer must be present for the delivery.
The classical delivery model utilizes couriers who serve customer requests. Each customer request consists in pickup and delivery locations (o-d pairs) associated with a tight delivery time window on which the delivery company and the customer agree. This research project aims to develop efficient pricing and revenue management methods for smoothing demand peaks and maximize the revenue for a company operating such a service. This approach will be based on an existing allocation module which determines the couriers’ schedules while minimizing the total costs. This research project is conducted within an industrial cooperation with Colisweb, a start-up based in Lille.
We look for candidates with a Ph.D. in Optimization, Operations Research with a strong track record evidenced by publications in top quality journals. A strong background in mathematical programming is required.
The successful candidate will join INOCS, a Belgian-french INRIA team, which aims to develop new models, algorithmic techniques and implementations for optimization problems with complex structure.
The position should be taken up in March 2017 or soon after.

Each customer request consists in pickup and delivery locations (o-d pairs) associated with a tight delivery time window on which the delivery company and the customer agree. This research project aims to develop efficient pricing and revenue management methods for smoothing demand peaks and maximize the revenue for a company operating such a service. This approach will be based on an existing allocation module which determines the couriers’ schedules while minimizing the total costs. This research project is conducted within an industrial cooperation with Colisweb, a start-up based in Lille.
We look for candidates with a Ph.D. in Optimization, Operations Research with a strong track record evidenced by publications in top quality journals. A strong background in mathematical programming is required.
The successful candidate will join INOCS, a Belgian-french INRIA team, which aims to develop new models, algorithmic techniques and implementations for optimization problems with complex structure.
The position should be taken up in March 2017 or soon after.

The new Optimization group at the University of Siegen, Germany offers two positions (Postdoc or Phd) for 3 years.
The research focus of the group which will be headed by Prof. Rob van Stee is online algorithms, approximation algorithms, and algorithmic game theory.
The positions are part-time (75%) with salary according to TV-L 13. The 3-year contract comes with the possibility of an extension. Both positions come with teaching duties (designing course material, grading assignments, supervising students).
For a postdoc we expect that the candidate has (or is very close to) a PhD in Computer Science or Mathematics and has a solid background in discrete math and algorithms.

PhD Position in Optimisation

A PhD studentship in optimization is available at the Dept. of Management Science, University of Strathclyde Business School, Glasgow, UK. Funding is available to cover 3 years of tuition fees plus a tax free stipend (£14,653 for 2017-18, and projected to increase to £15,020 for 2018-19 and £15,395 for 2019-20).
The studentship is open to candidates from any nationality (UK/EU/international), and the project topic is entitled "Optimization of Offshore Renewable Energy Arrays for Minimal Life-Cycle Costs".

ABOUT THE PROJECT
A fundamental difficulty in developing offshore renewable energy (ORE) sites is that the uncertain environmental conditions make accurately assessing the life-cycle costs of a site a challenging problem. In particular, logistical operations throughout the life of a site are subject to uncertain operating conditions, and it is therefore difficult to plan and schedule these operations, and to estimate the resulting durations and costs. Similarly, the generating potential throughout the operation of a given site is dependent on the realised weather as well as the availability of each asset, and uncertainties in each of these make it difficult to accurately predict the profits to be gained from energy production. Decisions on aspects such as the size, layout and composition of a site are therefore difficult to accurately quantify and compare.
This project will aim to develop optimisation models to identify the best strategy for designing an ORE site. A complimentary PhD project in the Dept. of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Marine Engineering at Strathclyde will take an alternative approach to the problem, and as both projects progress in parallel, mutual developments will feed into both projects. This will provide a cross-disciplinary approach to a challenging research problem with potential industry impact.
FUNDING AND ELIGIBILITY
Funding is available to cover 3 years of tuition fees for a UK/EU/international student, plus a tax free stipend of £14,653 for 2017-18, and projected to increase to £15,020 for 2018-19 and £15,395 for 2019-20. The student will be given opportunities to attend a conference and/or specialized training every year.
The PhD project requires a highly numerate graduate with interests in renewable energy. Candidates should have at least a strong Honours degree or equivalent (a strong 2:1 Honours degree, or a B.Sc. degree with 3.3 GPA in a 4.0 system), or preferably a Master’s degree in a quantitative discipline such as industrial engineering, operations research, mathematics or computer science (amongst others). Experience in programming and fundamental knowledge in optimization are not essential but highly desirable. Candidates who are not native English speakers will be required to provide evidence for their English skills (such as by IELTS or similar tests that are approved by UKVI, or a degree completed in an English speaking country).

Specific Requirements:
Candidates must have a strong background in Statistical Learning in the context of Machine Learning and experience in system design, algorithm development, and simulation of networked systems. In addition, the following skills and experiences are highly desirable:
- PhD Degree in Applied Mathematics or Computer Science
- Solid background on machine learning and data center networking
- Good knowledge of standard statistical learning tools (e.g., regression methods, kernel methods, artificial neural networks, reinforcement learning).
- Good knowledge of standard stochastic optimization paradigms (MDPs, dynamic programming) and sequential learning algorithms (multi-armed bandits)
- Good Knowledge of network architectures, data center architectures and protocols Proficiency with machine learning tools (R, Sage, SciPy, Matlab)
- Practical experience with big analytics tools (Hadoop, Spark, Storm, Flink) will be a plus
- Familiarity with low-level development languages (C/C++) will be a plus.
- Solid publication record in machine learning applied to networking problems

You will work under the supervision of prof. Fausto Errico. Fausto Errico is also member of CIRRELT (www.cirrelt.ca) and GERAD (www.gerad.ca), two worldwide renowned research centers in Operations Research, also located in Montréal. Opportunities for co-supervisions with other members of these two centers are possible and welcome.
Montréal (http://www.tourisme-montreal.org) is a vibrating, dynamic metropolis located in the province of Quebec, Canada. It hosts 5 major universities and it is often rated among the top cities worldwide for its quality of life.
Several research topics are available. The main application fields are: 1) Planning of innovative transit systems, 2) Electric vehicles and related stochastic and dynamic routing problems and 3) Management of hydropower generation. Generally speaking, the above applications require the solution of hard combinatorial problems featuring stochastic and dynamic aspects.
As a Ph.D. candidate you are expected to carry out top-level research to develop efficient solution algorithms for hard combinatorial problems. Methods include: decomposition strategies for large mathematical programs such as column generation, Benders decomposition, Lagrangean relaxation; implicit enumeration schemes, such as branch-and-cut and branch-and-price; two-stage and multi-stage stochastic programming; stochastic and approximate dynamic programming.

You must demonstrate advanced skills in C/C++ programming languages and you are at ease with mathematical programming solvers (CPLEX, Gurobi, etc).
