A PhD studentship in optimization is available at the Dept. of Management Science, University of Strathclyde Business School, Glasgow, UK. Funding is available to cover 3 years of tuition fees plus a tax free stipend (£14,653 for 2017-18, and projected to increase to £15,020 for 2018-19 and £15,395 for 2019-20).

The studentship is open to candidates from any nationality (UK/EU/international), and the project topic is entitled "Optimization of Offshore Renewable Energy Arrays for Minimal Life-Cycle Costs".

A fundamental difficulty in developing offshore renewable energy (ORE) sites is that the uncertain environmental conditions make accurately assessing the life-cycle costs of a site a challenging problem. In particular, logistical operations throughout the life of a site are subject to uncertain operating conditions, and it is therefore difficult to plan and schedule these operations, and to estimate the resulting durations and costs. Similarly, the generating potential throughout the operation of a given site is dependent on the realised weather as well as the availability of each asset, and uncertainties in each of these make it difficult to accurately predict the profits to be gained from energy production. Decisions on aspects such as the size, layout and composition of a site are therefore difficult to accurately quantify and compare.

This project will aim to develop optimisation models to identify the best strategy for designing an ORE site. A complimentary PhD project in the Dept. of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Marine Engineering at Strathclyde will take an alternative approach to the problem, and as both projects progress in parallel, mutual developments will feed into both projects. This will provide a cross-disciplinary approach to a challenging research problem with potential industry impact.


Funding is available to cover 3 years of tuition fees for a UK/EU/international student, plus a tax free stipend of £14,653 for 2017-18, and projected to increase to £15,020 for 2018-19 and £15,395 for 2019-20. The student will be given opportunities to attend a conference and/or specialized training every year.

The PhD project requires a highly numerate graduate with interests in renewable energy. Candidates should have at least a strong Honours degree or equivalent (a strong 2:1 Honours degree, or a B.Sc. degree with 3.3 GPA in a 4.0 system), or preferably a Master’s degree in a quantitative discipline such as industrial engineering, operations research, mathematics or computer science (amongst others). Experience in programming and fundamental knowledge in optimization are not essential but highly desirable. Candidates who are not native English speakers will be required to provide evidence for their English skills (such as by IELTS or similar tests that are approved by UKVI, or a degree completed in an English speaking country).

The Mathematical Sciences department of the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center invites applications for its 2017-2018 Herman Goldstine Memorial Postdoctoral Fellowship for research in the mathematical and computer sciences. The fellowship provides scientists of outstanding ability an opportunity to advance their scholarship as resident department members at the Research Center. The Research Center is located in Westchester County, less than an hour north of New York City.

The department provides an atmosphere in which basic research is combined with work on technical problems arising in industry. Our permanent members, academic visitors, and post-doctoral fellows pursue research in pure and applied mathematics and in theoretical and exploratory computer science. Areas of research include: algorithms (approximation, randomized, and on-line); complex systems; data mining (machine learning, pattern recognition, computational statistics); dynamical systems; high-performance computing (scientific computing, parallel computing, big-data); inverse problems; numerical analysis; optimization (discrete, continuous, global and stochastic); operations research; probability theory (stochastic models, risk management, queues & queuing networks, simulation); and statistics (time-series, multivariate analysis, spatiotemporal analysis, design of experiments & reliability).

Close interaction with permanent department members is expected and encouraged, but fellows are free to pursue their own research interests. Up to two fellowships will be awarded. Candidates must have received a Ph.D. degree after September 2012 or should expect to receive one before the fellowship commences in the second half of 2017 (usually in September). The fellowship has a period of one year, and may be extended another year by mutual agreement. The stipend is expected to be between $105,000 and $130,000, depending on the length of experience. An additional allowance for moving expenses will be provided.

The TCS Group at KTH Royal Institute of Technology invites applications for a PhD position in computer science focused on SAT solving.

KTH Royal Institute of Technology is the leading technical university in Sweden. The Theoretical Computer Science Group at KTH ( offers a strong research environment spanning a wide range of research topics such as complexity theory and approximation algorithms, computer and network security, cryptography, formal methods and natural language processing. We have one of Europe's most prominent groups in algorithms and complexity theory, and the research conducted here has attracted numerous international awards and grants in recent years.

The PhD student will be working in the research group of Jakob Nordstrom. Much of the activities of this research group revolve around the themes of efficient algorithms for satisfiability in propositional logic (SAT solving) and lower bounds on the efficiency of methods for reasoning about SAT (proof complexity). On the practical side, one problem of interest is to gain a better understanding of, and improve, the performance of current state-of-the-art SAT solvers --- in particular, solvers using conflict-driven clause learning (CDCL). We are even more interested in exploring new techniques that hold out the theoretical possibility of exponential improvements over CDCL, but seem hard to implement efficiently in practice, e.g., algebraic methods such as Groebner bases or geometric methods such as pseudo-Boolean solving (basically 0/1 integer linear programming).

The research project is financed by a Breakthrough Research Grant from the Swedish Research Council and a Starting Independent Researcher Grant from the European Research Council. A more detailed description of the project can be found at The group currently consists of two postdoctoral researchers and four PhD students (in addition to the PI). There are also several other professors, postdocs, and PhD students in the TCS Group working on other aspects of algorithms and computational complexity, and so this is a unique opportunity to explore new connections between theoretical and practical areas of computer science within a vibrant and growing research environment.

This is a four-year full-time employed position, but PhD positions usually (though not necessarily) include 20% teaching, in which case they are prolonged for one more year. L’assegno di ricerca, tema di questo bando, ha come obiettivo la modellazione e lo sviluppo di soluzioni distribuite per l’elaborazione dati in ambito social media e smart city, con soluzioni big data Lo studio sarà orientato allo sviluppo di soluzioni su architetture distribuite e parallele, data mining, semantic computing, e per l’acquisizione di dati da social media, e georeferenziati da sorgenti multiple verso soluzioni linked open data per knowledge base, sistemi esperti e di sentiment, early warning. Le tecnologie che si andranno a sviluppare saranno di data mining, intelligenza artificiale, machine learning, etc. Il lavoro si svolge nel contesto dei progetti Sii-Mobility, RESOLUTE e REPLICATE descritti in seguito, e può dare accesso al dottorato di ricerca triennale, oppure essere una assegno post doc per i candidati che hanno già il dottorato.

L’assegnista si troverà ad avere compiti specifici che potrà sviluppare in modo autonomo e al contempo ad essere inserito nel team di DISIT lab, e potrà pertanto trarre subito vantaggio da una situazione già lanciata e con dati reali, e le soluzioni potranno essere utilizzate nel contesto delle sperimentazioni del DISIT lab per lo sviluppo della Smart City di Firenze.

The research grant contract described in this competition announcement is aimed at modeling and developing distributed solutions for data processing in the field of social media, smart city and big data. The research will be focused on developing solutions on distributed and parallel architectures, data mining, semantic computing, and acquisition of social media and geo-referenced data from multiple sources towards linked open data solutions for knowledgebase, expert systems, sentiment analysis e early warning. The technologies to be developed will be grounded on data mining, artificial intelligence, machine learning, etc. The framework of the research is linked to the projects Sii-Mobility, RESOLUTE H2020 and REPLICATE H2020 described below, and can grant access to the three-year PhD or could be a post-doc grant contract for candidates who have already obtained a PhD.
SII-Mobility (national Smart City, RESOLUTE H2020 and H2020 REPLICATE projects of the European Commission are research projects at both National and European level respectively. In these projects, there are many industry partners and institutional / governmental entities: municipalities, cities, etc., and many research centers.
Sii-Mobility, RESOLUTE and Replicate focus on the modeling and development of Social Media analysis and Smart City solutions which are based on the Km4City model developed by DISIT laboratory ( and on Twitter Vigilance.
SII-Mobility has stressed more the mobility aspects, route identification, production of customized recommendations, dynamic geometry of ZTL, dynamic and adaptive models of payment, etc., while RESOLTUE H2020 is focused on risk and resilience of critical infrastructures, REPLICATE is more focused on integration aspects among IOT, energy, mobility, integration aspects which can produce smart solutions in energy consumption, a more positive measurement of the state of the city and could also work as integrated mobility services.
The grant researcher will have specific tasks and he will be able to develop them in an independent way; but at the same time he will be part of the DISIT lab team, and he will therefore immediately take advantage of an already tested situation, with real data, while solutions may be exploited in the context of DISIT lab testing, for the development of Florence, Smart City.

The University of Edinburgh's School of Mathematics is seeking a Postdoc in Portfolio Optimization. A sound background in combinatorial and discrete optimization would also be desirable.

Applications are invited for an 18 month postdoctoral position in the areas of mathematical finance and optimization with a particular focus on probabilistic and optimization methods used in portfolio theory. The position will be based at the School of Mathematics, University of Edinburgh. There is a possibility of an extension for a further 18 months.

We look for candidates with a Ph.D. in Mathematics, Optimization, Operations Research, or any related field with a strong track record evidenced by publications in top quality journals.

The successful candidate will join a team of four mathematicians:
Sergio García Quiles, Jacek Gondzio, Joerg Kalcsics and Sotirios Sabanis who bridge between the Edinburgh Research Group in Optimization and the Probability group.

The project is funded by the EPSRC Impact Acceleration Account and Standard Life Investments and initially will involve research in portfolio construction approaches to optimal diversification.
The project is a step towards a strategic partnership between Edinburgh University and Standard Life Investments (SLI) focused on quantitative portfolio and investment research. There will be opportunities to interact with SLI in order to enhance understanding of practical research implications and aid further career development.

The position should be taken up in March 2017 or soon after.
The starting salary will be in the range of £32,004 - £38,183, depending on experience.

Postdoc in Container Terminal Optimization
The Department of Management Engineering invites applications for a position as Postdoc in Operations Research with a focus on Container Terminal Optimizaiton.
The Department is looking for a flexible and enthusiastic candidate, who is willing to be a part of a pilot research project on how operation research techniques can be used to boost collaboration between container carriers and container terminals. We are interested in optimizing the ship handling operations by exploiting synergies between the container vessel stowage plan and the scheduling of the cranes in a container terminal. The project is to be run in collaboration with APM Terminals in Aarhus, which will be providing data and details about the current planning practices.
The postdoc appointment is of the total of 1 year from the starting date. Being a pilot project, the candidate will also have the possibility of participating on the writing of the next funding application, and eventually on the execution of the defined project.

Responsibilities and tasks
The applicant will be responsible of the development of optimisation models and/or algorithms for the ship loading problem. An integrated container to transport vehicle assignment and scheduling problem.
There will be possibilities to contribute with lectures to the teaching within the area.

Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent. A good knowledge of operations research techniques including: mathematical modelling, heuristics, metaheuristics and matheuristics. The applicant should also be able to program in an efficient programming language such as Java or C++.
The research team has a Linux server available for performing computational experiments, thus knowledge of the Linux environment would be a plus but not a requirement.
