The field of interest will be the development of innovative approaches to rostering, packing and vehicle routing problems and their application to real-world problems, in areas such as urban mobility and transportation, shipping and logistics transportation, multimodal freight infrastructure planning & management, and general cargo logistics.

The ideal candidate should combine previous expertise, or at least keen interest, in the above-mentioned topics with a taste for experimental work; experience with Mixed-Integer Linear Program modeling/solution tools and with best practice in optimization software development will be a definite plus.

Applicants must have a PhD in operations research, computer science, software engineering, applied mathematics or equivalent. They must be willing to integrate to the research activities of the team by providing original ideas, participating to international conferences and producing high quality scientific papers. The Information Sciences group at the Los Alamos National Laboratory has an opening at a postdoctoral level in the area of combinatorial optimization. The selected candidates will be given the opportunity to work with one of the only four commercially available quantum annealing computers worldwide, D-Wave 2X, with more than 1000 qubits. Typical tasks involve formulating an NP-hard optimization problem as a quadratic unconstraint binary optimization (QUBO) problem and designing methods for improving quantum annealing scalability and accuracy.

Quantum annealing is considered as one of the promising exascale and “beyond Moore’s law” computing technologies. Quantum annealers such as LANL’s D-Wave 2X are designed to natively propose solutions for optimization problems that are known to be challenging for classical computers.

Preliminary knowledge about quantum physics or quantum computing is not a requirement for this position, but strong combinatorial algorithm design and implementation skills are essential.

The successful applicant should have a strong publication record and will be expected to publish results in high impact peer-reviewed journals and conferences. This is a long-term appointment (up to three years), so candidates who can commit to a longer time frame will be preferred. However, candidates available for shorter periods may be considered for internships.

Qualifications:

(1) A PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics, or related field within the past five years or soon to be completed
(2) Research-level expertise in at least one of the following: combinatorial optimization, graph algorithms
(3) Demonstrated ability to publish research in peer-reviewed journals or conference proceedings

Linköping University expands research in railway planning

The research group for public transport and railways at Linköping University is expanding its research in railway planning and searches for new staff members.

The research group is part of the Division for Communication and Transport Systems affiliated in the city center of Norrköping. The division has over 70 researchers, lecturers and graduate students, studying communication networks in its broadest sense. Many projects aim at developing models and methods, which describe the traffic system and can be used as decision support tools by infrastructure managers, operators, vehicle drivers and others.

Current projects in railway include, for example, construction of robust railway timetables, defining and balancing multi-objectives for timetable qualities, socio-economic distribution of railway capacity, and scheduling of time for maintenance work.

Our research is carried out together with stakeholders and funders from industry and society. We are coordinating the national research program Capacity in the Railway Traffic System (KAJT) and some of our collaborators are RISE SICS, Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI) and Swedish Transport Administration. We are also honored to organize the 8th International Conference on Railway Operations Modelling and Analysis (RailNorrköping) which will be held in June 2019.

We are now looking for people who want to join our group, and work with one or more of the following topics:
- Operational train planning and shunting, aiming at increased rail cargo speeds and capacity.
- Strategic planning of critical infrastructure components (switches) which have a major impact both on maintenance and traffic.

We wish you have a strong background from mathematics, modelling, optimization, programming and/or simulation. You have studied either applied mathematics, computer science, operations research, software engineering or equivalent. If you also have experiences from railways or transportation planning it is beneficial but not necessary. Molde University College announces one PhD scholarship in logistics, within the field of discrete optimization. The position is for a period of 3 years, and provides the opportunity for professional development through studies towards a PhD. The position requires admission to the PhD-programme at the Faculty of Logistics.

The candidate will be working within the research project “Design and Experimental Analysis of Novel Integrated Optimization Methods” (AXIOM), partially funded by the Research Council of Norway. There are three main partners within the project: 1) Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management at NTNU, 2) Molde University College, and 3) SINTEF Digital. Collaboration with world leading research groups from Portugal, Canada, USA, Italy, and Brazil is also an integral part of the project. The main objective of the project is to design novel integrated methods for solving complex discrete optimization problems. The expected results are innovative methods combining elements from exact methods, metaheuristics, and heterogeneous computing. AXIOM has four work packages (WPs). WP1 starts from exact methods and analyzes how these methods can be extended and improved using heuristics. WP2 investigates how exact methods are best utilized within a metaheuristic framework. WP3 develops algorithms that fully utilize all processing elements of modern PCs and are flexible and scalable. In WP4, experimental data are collected, analyzed, and synthesized into new knowledge and understanding. The candidate will mainly work within WP2.

The developed methods will be generic, but the inventory routing problem (IRP) is the main case. The IRP is a generalization of the vehicle routing problem and is concerned with the repeated distribution of products from supply facilities to demand points over a given planning period. The objective is to minimize the distribution costs during the planning period without causing stock-outs or overflows at any of the customers or producers.

The IRP is interesting from a practical as well as a theoretical perspective since it integrates parts of a supply chain that are traditionally managed separately. The problem arises when the consumer allows the supplier, or a third party, to decide on the timing and size of deliveries. The increased flexibility that the supplier gains from this agreement can be turned into reduced costs for the whole supply chain. The theoretical interest comes from the challenge of coordinating three notoriously hard problems (vehicle routing, inventory management, and scheduling of deliveries), and developing theory and solution methods for the coordinated problem.

Candidates for the position must have completed a minimum of 5 years of recognized higher education beyond the basic matriculation requirements to Norwegian higher educational institutions, including a bachelor's degree corresponding to a minimum of 180 ECTS credits, and a master's degree of minimum 120 ECTS credits or equivalent credits, within relevant academic areas. The master's degree must include a master's thesis of minimum 30 ECTS credits or equivalent. The average grade of the master's degree should be grade B or better on the ECTS grading scale or an equivalent average grade on other grading scales.

In addition, applicants also have to address the following selection criteria:

Interest and solid background in discrete optimization
High level of personal responsibility, initiative, and ability to work in a project team
Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English
Willingness and ability to communicate and work together with technical subject matter experts
Experience in programming

The place of work is Molde University College. The position will be remunerated at wage level 50 on the Norwegian State salary scale, with gross salary from NOK 436 900 a year, of which 2 % is deducted for the Norwegian State Pension Fund. Higher salary may be considered for especially qualified candidates. The appointment will be in accordance with current Norwegian regulations concerning fixed-term jobs in the public sector and guidelines for employment as a scholarship holder at universities and university colleges.

Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) has a vacancy in the Network & Optimization research group for a
postdoc in the research project

"Approximation Algorithms, Quantum Information and Semidefinite Optimization”.

This research project aims to explore the limits of efficient computation within classical and quantum computing, using semidefinite optimization as a main unifying tool. The position involves research into the mathematical and computer science aspects of approximation algorithms for discrete optimization, quantum entanglement in communication, and complexity of fundamental problems in classical and quantum computing.
We especially welcome applicants with a solid background and interest in algebraic methods for optimization.
The project will be carried out in collaboration between Monique Laurent from the CWI Networks & Optimization research group, Ronald de Wolf from the CWI Algorithms & Complexity research group, and Nikhil Bansal from the department of mathematics and computer science of the Technical University Eindhoven. The position is funded through an NWO-TOP grant.

Hydrogen is the only carbon-free storable fuel. When combined with renewable energy sources, it has the potential to become one of the main contributors of a sustainable future as a green energy vector.
This PhD thesis will focus on a Wind-to-Hydrogen (W2H2) system where hydrogen is produced through electrolysis of water and electricity is provided by a wind farm. After production, hydrogen should be stored, transported and distributed in an optimal way, given the numerous technology alternatives available.

In this system, there will be two decision makers: wind farm operator and hydrogen producer with conflicting interests in a hierarchical setting. This type of problems is usually modeled as a Stackelberg game (bilevel programming) in the literature and it will be direction of this thesis as well.

Uncertainties of the system notably come from electricity generation (due to changing weather conditions), variability of energy prices in the day-ahead spot market and demand fluctuation. These uncertainties will be addressed in the modelling part.

We are offering a 3-year CIFRE contract PhD thesis in collaboration with PersEE Innovation, a Paris based startup company (Sezin Afsar) and Laboratory CERMICS, Ecole des Ponts Paris Tech (Michel De Lara). The thesis will be based on modeling and solving different versions of this problem described above. Different types of real-life or realistic data will be available for testing.

Required Technical Skills:
• Master’s degree or equivalent in Industrial Eng, Computer Science, Applied Math or any relevant subject
• Experience in Python/C/C++ and solvers such as GAMS, CPLEX or Gurobi
• General knowledge of mathematical programming and optimization. Expertise in stochastic and bilevel programming is an advantage.
• Familiarity with at least one of relevant fields (energy systems, renewable energy, scheduling, supply chain management…)
